I'm Liz...
I'm a Brit living a
life I LOVE in Lisbon.

I’m a linguist, traveller and wide-eyed world citizen. I’ve always believed that speaking the language of the country you are in is the only way to truly get under its skin and connect with its people.

I first came to Portugal as a language student in 2008, and felt all the frustration and discomfort that comes from not being able to express yourself. I would silently sit at the dinner table praying my Portuguese housemates wouldn’t ask me question, laughing awkwardly at jokes I definitely didn’t get. It was like I was a different person. Inside I knew I was fun and friendly… but on the outside I was too scared to utter a word. What if I made a mistake?

To ditch this silent alter ego, I created my own simple tools and tricks that would help me tame those complex grammar rules and found fun ways to immerse myself in the language. I also practiced speaking, every single day.  By the time I graduated my degree in Portuguese I was top of the class, and went on to study interpreting at a University in London.

When I returned to Portugal to live in Lisbon full-time, I adapted to life there with complete joy and ease. But I noticed my other expat friends were struggling, unable to get things done as they constantly came up against the dreaded language barrier. Not only that – their efforts to learn Portuguese had been unsuccessful, due to the outdated and overly-academic way the language was taught in traditional settings. When they looked online for help, all they found were resources to learn Brazilian Portuguese.

That’s when I started my YouTube channel, Talk the Streets, which has quickly grown to serve an audience of millions. I was inundated with requests to teach – so I created my signature Portuguese Pro online program.  Inside, I help people relocating or retiring to Portugal to build their confidence and conversation skills in Portuguese, so they can live Portugal at its absolute best… without a boring textbook in sight. We cover the practical Portuguese you need, while rooting all grammar lessons in real-life scenarios.

The foundation of speaking any language is pronunciation. We start by taking a deep dive into the essential sounds you need to speak Portuguese like a local. With easily digestible lessons and a library of pronunciation drills, you’ll be able to read any text aloud and be understood by locals with ease.

Forming a sentence is a lot like doing a jigsaw puzzle. Here we will learn how to use each individual piece and fit them together to create conversations. Every bit of grammar you learn is put into the context of a real-life dialogue, based on everyday situations from the supermarket to the bakery and beyond.

PHASE THREE

Confident
and
Conversational

Now that you have developed a rock-solid foundation and have begun regular speaking practice, you are ready to tackle some nitty-gritty. Little words can cause big problems if you can’t use them correctly. Here we will master the use of essential grammar so your sentence structure is flawless. Oh, and there’s no need to dread this part – the flashcards, games and exercises I have made available actually make it fun.

Portuguese Pro starts from zero - but many students who have done some study will find this helpful as they can refresh and consolidate what they have already learned. Just be mindful that Portuguese Pro does start from ground zero, so if you find repetition of the basics frustrating, you will be better served by another program.

This course was not built with passing the CIPLE exam as its main focus. I prefer to teach people to communicate in everyday life, rather than how to pass an exam!

With that said, I know that obtaining Portuguese Citizenship is important to a lot of you, so you will have access to Bonus lessons that cover everything you need to know in order to practice for and pass the CIPLE. And since the content of this course covers the A1 and A2 levels, you will be more-than-equipped with the right knowledge you need to tackle the exam.
