How to Order Coffee in Portugal

Your first “oh my God I’ve got to speak Portuguese in public” moment is probably going to happen in a coffee shop.

It feels like a running a gauntlet. What are the options? What is a meia-de-leite? Can I even pay with card here? Quick I’m holding up the queue… oh never mind. I wasn’t that thirsty anyway.

I’ve definitely been there. So my friends Ana, Miguel and I made this four-minute video explaining how to order a coffee in Portugal. Keep watching for a short dialogue between the native speakers – see the transcript below!

    TRANSCRIPT

Miguel: Olá bom dia! Tudo bem? Eu queria uma meia-de-leite, se faz favor. Vocês têm alguma alternativa ao leite?

Hi, good morning! I would like a meia-de-leite please. Do you guys have any milk alternatives?

Ana: Temos, temos leite de soja pelo mesmo valor, ou leite de aveia.

We do, we have soy milk for the same price, or oat milk.

Miguel: OK, então eu queria leite de aveia se faz favor. Depois, o vosso green smoothie, o que é que tem?

OK, then I’d like oat milk please. Then, your green smoothie, what is in it?

Ana: Tem banana, abacaxi, gengibre, espinafres e leite de amêndoa.

It has banana, pineapple, ginger, spinach and almond milk.

Miguel: OK, se calhar fica para a próxima. Depois eu queria levar uma fatia do bolo de limão se faz favor. E coisas mais salgadas, o que é que tem?

OK maybe next time. Then I’d like to have a slice of the lemon cake please. Then savoury stuff, what do you have?

Ana: Tens aqui as opções no menu.

You have the options here on the menu.

Miguel: Então eu vou querer levar uma tosta de queijo de cabra se faz favor.

So I’ll have a goats cheese toastie please.

Ana: É tudo? Fica €9.80 se faz favor.

Is that everything? That comes to €9.80 please.

    Miguel: OK, aceitam cartão?

    OK, do you take card?

Miguel: OK obrigada então. Bom dia!

OK thanks then. Have a good day!

Thank you to the awesome Selva café in Alcântara for hosting us for this video, and to the talented Miguel and Ana!
